History of Fukui Municipal Library
yApril,1909zThe first library in Fukui was constructed by means of a contribution from old Fukui feudal lord Matsudaira's
family, and the library was opened as a municipal library.
yJuly, 1940zThe library was accredited as the "Fukui Prefecture Central Library" by the
Fukui Prefectural governor.
yJuly, 1945zTemporary closing of the library was nessecitated due to evecuation of the collection of books.
A part of the collection, consigned to elementary schools and libraries in the city, was reduced to ash.
yNovember, 1945zThe Library was reopened in a room at Toyo elementary school, which was saved from the fires of war.
yJuly, 1948zThe library was moved to Mitani-kan, because Minori elementary school was completely destroyed in the Fukui earthquake.
yMarch, 1950zThe rebuilding of the library becomes impossible due to the monetary situation of the city, and it closed down.
(The collection was consigned to another organization for safekeeping.)
yJune, 1962zActivities of a book mobile were initiated.
y1965zDemand for the reopening of the library developed and in response construction of a new facility began in the Bunkyo region of the city.
yJune, 1976zThe building was completed.
yAugust, 1976zIt was opened as "Fukui Municipal Library". It began to serve as the first large sized modern library in Fukui.
yApril, 1980z"the picture story show and the picture book time" was begun.
yAugust, 1992zMidori library is opened as the second Fukui city library in Wakasugi-cho which is in the south-west area of Fukui city.
This library opening provided improved services to the entire city.
yFebruary, 2006zMiyama library established by Miyama-cho and Shimizu library established by Shimizu-cho became libraries of Fukui city by the consolidation of municipalities.
yApril, 2007zSakuragi Library opened on the East side of Fukui Station in April.
